Why not to trim trees between March and September

It’s spring and songbirds are busy raising their families.  Please help keep these wild families together by observing songbird-safe tree-trimming practices.  Download and share our handy guide to help you and your neighbors determine when it is safe to trim trees and bushes.

Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Enclosures needed.

URGENTLY NEEDED! Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Enclosures.

Sometimes, our persecuted Wildlife gets lucky. It doesn’t happen often, but it happens occasionally, when passionate people decide to pour their heart and soul into #EthicalConservation.

In Johannesburg, South Africa, our Wildlife just got lucky.

The team at the Jhb Wildlife Veterinary Hospital is dedicated to treating and rehabilitating small to medium-sized urban wildlife.
A few weeks ago, Wild Heart Wildlife Foundation did a surprise #SupplyDrop for them, stocking them up on veterinary medicines and consumables numbering hundreds of items, to the value of over R20 000. This was a great start, but we have to do more! All the animals here are treated at no charge, and the aim is always successful re-wilding and release. We have to put the animals first, be their voice, and give them the best chance at survival.
*Anything worth doing, is worth doing well*

A substantial number of the patients are raptors, and they need specialist care. In the pictures you can see a selection of the beautiful birds of prey who have been treated here.
***Urgently Needed right now is 3 x Rehabilitation Enclosures for these winged wonders. Having the proper enclosures aid rehabilitation and improves the survival rate of rescues.

The enclosures are made out of a steel framework with gate, diamond-mesh covered and completely enclosed in shade-netting to minimize trauma and external stimuli. They are 5m in length, and 2.4m wide, so that a pre-flight test can easily be accommodated 😉.
We have sourced the manufacturers, and just need that magical ingredient – your support – to make these life-saving enclosures a reality.
The cost is R25 000 (1,800 USD) for all three enclosures. The injured Birds of Prey really need this. Every single cent will help towards being the wind beneath their wings, and will help set them up for that sweet flight of freedom.

As always we will keep you updated on progress, from the building to the delivery and installation of these critically needed rooms.

Please help by donating here to Support #RaptorRehab at: goo.gl/eqQSlR and help us build this for them! You can also donate directly at: paypal.me/wildheartwildlife
We cannot do it without you.

Indigenous Australians help to battle non native and destructive species

This video in the article is produced by Territory NRM, showcases Desert Wildlife Services (Rachel Paltridge) and Newhaven Rangers (Christine, Alice, Benedict and George) integrating science and indigenous tracking skills to remove feral cats from the landscape, reducing pressure on threatened Great Desert Skink populations at the Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s, Newhaven Sanctuary.

Please have patience as it can take a few minutes to upload the article:
Feral cats continue to place pressure on native animals, especially in arid ecosystems.

Vikings Stadium-Intentional Bird Murderer?

There is enough evidence from studies done all over the world that glass windows cause birds to fly on and to die.For years before the Vikings Stadi.was build, conservationists have warned and asked to use bitd friendly glass which was denied for not sane reasons.

There is however still time as there are other ways to deter birds from flying into the glass.

Maltese Wild Bird Regulation Unit (WBRU taking Falsly credit for incompetence

Stop taking credit for our work to hide your incompetence! The Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) has accused the Maltese Wild Bird Regulation Unit (WBRU) of falsely taking the credit of CABS efforts to whitewash its total failure to control illegal bird trapping in spring. The eNGO refers to a statement sent yesterday by the WBRU to the members of the European Union Network for the Implementation and Enforcement of Environmental Law (IMPEL), an association of 51 environmental authorities in 36 countries, in which the head of WBRU, Mr. Sergei Golovkin, is reporting about Malta´s alledged “enforcement efforts” to combat illegal finch trapping in spring. In his statement Golovkin writes: “I wish to emphasize that these enforcement operations are being carried out in a constant and routine manner, and contrary to CABS allegations of “tolerance” towards illegalities, enforcement is effective and produces the desired results”. To undermine his remarks the head of the WBRU explains that two trappers have been apprehended and “17 active illegal trapping sites were located and dismantled, 12 live protected birds used as live decoys seized, and various trapping paraphernalia confiscated” as a “result of police patrols and WBRU´s enforcement action taken over the past two weeks”. The statement was published on the IMPEL network´s homepage: https://www.impel-esix.eu/reply-on-message-23-03-2017-about-mist-nets-on-malta/

In a reply from today CABS said that the seizures and apprehensions listed by the WBRU to impress their European collegues are 100% the results of CABS reports to the police. This refers to the number of illegal sites located and dismantled as well as to the seizure of 12 live protected birds. “All examples listed in the WBRU´s statement to demonstrate its “effectiveness” are in fact cases which have been documented and reported by CABS. If you remove the cases reported by our teams from the list the government stands there empty-handed”, CABS Press Officer Axel Hirschfeld said. CABS also stressed that the number of 17 seizures or prosecutions, regardless of who reported them, is a minuscule number compared to cases reported by CABS to the police in the last 3 weeks. “We have mapped a total of 133 illegal active sites on a single morning, 54 of which have already been reported to the authorities with map locations/ photos of the nets installed by the poachers. The other 79 sites are being monitored by CABS teams to produce video evidence for the police to ensure prosecutions”, CABS Wildlife Crime Officer Fiona Burrows said. She added that CABS reports have led to the confiscation of at least 21 live decoys while the WBRU in its statement referred to only 12 birds seized.

By listing these data the WBRU has given proof that it has either no clue what is going on in the countryside or that it is deliberately downsizing the problem. It´s bad enough that the government does nothing against illegal trapping but it just takes the biscuit that they deceive the EU and IMPEL into believing that there is no problem”, Axel Hirschfeld said adding that the only ones benefitting from such actions are the poachers.
